Sustainable Open Spaces for Everyone
Corica Park Open Space Project
Our Mission
Eco Driven. Equity Focused. Exceptional Golf.
Greenway Golf believes that golf courses should be sustainable open spaces for everyone.
Our mission is to unlock the potential of golf course space by harmonizing the successful operation of our golf business with ecological stewardship and community benefit through innovative, measurable environmental practices, inclusive, results-driven social initiatives and inspired design.
Corica Park, Greenway’s flagship property in Alameda, California, is testament to our efforts to model how golf courses can be redesigned and successfully operated as places for flora, fauna and all people to flourish.
What is Open Space Project?
o·pen /ˈōp(ə)n/
having no enclosing or confining barrier to the outdoors
presenting no obstacle to passage or view
not restricted to a particular group or category of participants
Open Space Project is Greenway Golf’s initiative to engage the entire community in the reimaging of Corica Park as a sustainable and equitable green space for broad environmental and social benefit.
Corica Park is home to 333 acres of shared green space, the largest recreation and parks site in the City of Alameda. Like all municipal golf courses, it is owned by ALL city residents, but typically accessed by very few. As stewards of this land, we strive to address inequities in access to open space & sport to ensure that Corica Park serves as a vital community resource for all Alamedans.
Why Now?
Open Space Access + The Power of Sports = Opportunity
The issue: Our public green spaces, including municipal golf courses do not reflect the diversity of today’s world.
Why is this the case? Historically excluded groups typically: 1)Live further away from outdoor recreational spaces. 2)Don’t feel ownership of public land. 3)Don’t feel welcome in these spaces.
Why is it important? Communal open spaces are critical for physical, mental, social and economic well-being. They provide safe spaces for exercise, play, learning, bonding, networking and civic engagement. Given these tremendous benefits, inequitable open space access is a pressing environmental and social justice issue.
An increasingly digital world and Covid-19 closures are among the factors that are diminishing the availability of these important gathering places nationwide. Municipal golf courses, which occupy large swathes of communal space in cities across the country, can help fill this critical community need.
